Overview

The FSO MIMO Communication Simulator is a comprehensive performance evaluation tool for Free-Space Optical (FSO) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems operating in atmospheric environments. It enables researchers, engineers, and system designers to simulate the impact of atmospheric impairments and spatial diversity techniques on the performance of FSO MIMO systems. The simulator considers realistic channel effects such as atmospheric turbulence, scintillation, attenuation due to fog/haze/smoke, pointing errors, and angle-of-arrival (AOA) fluctuations. It supports different MIMO configurations (SISO, SIMO, MISO, MIMO) and spatial diversity combining techniques such as Equal Gain Combining (EGC), Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC), and Selection Combining (SelC).

Note: Distributed as a compiled .exe file with embedded MATLAB code. No source code will be provided. MATLAB Runtime (MCR) is sufficient.

Key features

  • Supported Configurations: SISO, SIMO, MISO, and full MIMO architectures, Up to 8×8 MIMO configuration support * Atmospheric Impairments: Turbulence (weak to strong), modeled via Log-Normal, Gamma-Gamma, or Exponentiated Weibull distributions, Scintillation Index calculation and inclusion, Fog/Haze/Smoke Attenuation using realistic visibility and extinction coefficients, Pointing Errors (jitter and misalignment modeled via Rayleigh or Hoyt distributions), AOA Fluctuations based on receiver aperture geometry and link alignment
  • Diversity Techniques: Equal Gain Combining (EGC), Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC), Selection Combining (SelC)
  • Performance Metrics: Bit Error Rate (BER), Outage Probability, Capacity (bps/Hz), SNR improvement due to diversity

Use cases

  • FSO Link Planning: Determine optimal MIMO and diversity configurations for urban FSO deployments
  • Performance Benchmarking: Compare different spatial diversity techniques under varying turbulence
  • Resilience Analysis: Study robustness of FSO MIMO links under fog, haze, or pointing instability
  • Research & Education: Academic tool for teaching and exploring MIMO in optical wireless communication

System requirements
