Overview

The FSO Modulation Performance Evaluator is a comprehensive simulation and analysis tool designed to assess the performance of Free-Space Optical (FSO) communication systems under various atmospheric conditions, using a wide range of digital modulation schemes. This tool is ideal for researchers, system engineers, and educators to understand and optimize the trade-offs between modulation type, system complexity, and link performance under real-world impairments such as atmospheric attenuation, turbulence, and pointing errors.

Note: This software is delivered as a standalone .exe file (source code not included). Requires MATLAB Runtime (MCR) to run.

Key features

  • Supported Modulation Schemes: On-Off Keying (OOK), M-ary Phase Shift Keying (M-PSK), M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (M-QAM)
  • Atmospheric Impairment Modeling: Attenuation due to fog, haze, and rain using visibility-based models, Log-normal and gamma-gamma models for weak to moderate turbulence, Pointing error effects modeled with Gaussian jitter and beam misalignment
  • Performance Metrics: Bit Error Rate (BER) vs. SNR curves for each modulation, Power efficiency and bandwidth efficiency trade-offs, Minimum required SNR for target BER, Spectral efficiency comparisons
  • Advanced Configuration Options: Adjustable modulation order (e.g., BPSK, QPSK, 16-QAM, 64-QAM), Receiver types: coherent and non-coherent detection, Link distance, beam divergence, and aperture size inputs

Use cases

  • FSO System Design and Optimization: Selecting the optimal modulation scheme based on environmental constraints and system goals
  • Performance Benchmarking: Compare BER performance of different modulation schemes under fog, haze, or clear sky conditions
  • Education & Training: Demonstrate the effects of modulation and channel impairments in advanced optical communications courses
  • Tactical and Military Communications: Evaluate robustness of different modulations for FSO systems in harsh weather and mobile scenarios

System requirements

  • Software Dependencies: MATLAB or MATLAB Runtime (MCR)
