Overview

The Intersatellite Optical Communication Simulator is a standalone Windows application designed to model and analyze optical wireless links between satellites in space—typically between Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), and Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) platforms. It provides detailed simulation of line-of-sight optical communication links, capturing space environment impairments such as pointing error, beam divergence, platform jitter, and tracking inaccuracies. This tool allows researchers, space system developers, and integrators to simulate optical intersatellite links (OISLs) under various operational parameters to evaluate key performance metrics such as Bit Error Rate (BER), received power, and channel capacity. ?

Note: Distributed as a compiled standalone .exe file. MATLAB source code is not included.

Key features

  • Orbital Geometry and Link Modeling: Support for LEO–LEO, LEO–MEO, MEO–GEO, and GEO–GEO scenarios, Adjustable intersatellite distance, relative velocity, and tracking angle, Time-varying link analysis based on orbital motion
  • Optical Channel Modeling: Free-space optical link without atmospheric impairment (vacuum propagation), Beam divergence and diffraction loss, Pointing error modeled using Gaussian jitter distributions, Receiver misalignment and tracking error simulation
  • Performance Metrics: Average Bit Error Rate (BER), Received optical power, Channel capacity (Shannon capacity in dBps/Hz), Link margin under alignment loss
  • Simulation Engine: Monte Carlo simulations for statistically accurate performance evaluation, Parametric sweeps (e.g., aperture size, jitter variance, data rate)

Use cases

  • Satellite Manufacturers & Integrators: Evaluation of design parameters for optical terminals and beam tracking
  • Aerospace R&D: Study of link robustness under different orbit combinations and misalignment levels
  • Academic & Training: Education and prototyping for OISL concepts and error performance analysis
  • Government & Defense Projects: Link feasibility and security performance for intersatellite networks (e.g., LEO constellations)

System requirements

  • Software Dependencies: MATLAB or MATLAB Runtime (MCR)
