Underwater Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) Analyzer

The Underwater Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) Analyzer is a standalone Windows application that simulates and evaluates the optical spatial resolution performance of underwater

Overview

The Underwater Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) Analyzer is a standalone Windows application that simulates and evaluates the optical spatial resolution performance of underwater imaging and communication systems by computing the MTF of the underwater channel. This simulator accounts for critical physical parameters such as temperature, salinity, turbidity, chlorophyll concentration, and depth, all of which affect optical signal degradation due to absorption, scattering, and refractive index gradients. It is ideal for system designers, marine researchers, defense applications, and optical engineers aiming to optimize underwater sensing or data transmission systems.

Note: This tool is delivered as a compiled .exe file. MATLAB source code is not included.

Key features

  • Underwater Optical Channel Modeling: Supports modeling in coastal, open ocean, and inland water types, Spectral support: visible light range (400–700 nm), Depth-dependent absorption and scattering coefficients using empirical models (e.g., Jerlov water types), Incorporates temperature-salinity gradient effects on refractive index and MTF roll-off
  • Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) Analysis: Computes MTF for given distances, wavelengths, and field-of-view, Includes multiple scattering and forward scattering lobe effects, Contrast degradation modeled using the small-angle approximation and radiative transfer theory
  • Environmental Parameters: Temperature ( C), Salinity (ppt), Chlorophyll concentration (mg/m ), Depth (m), Turbidity (NTU or Secchi depth), Adjustable particle size distribution
  • Performance Metrics: Spatial frequency vs. MTF curve, Effective imaging range for given contrast thresholds, Comparison of MTF under varied temperature-salinity conditions

Use cases

  • Underwater Imaging System Designers: Determine optimal imaging range and wavelength for given conditions
  • Marine Biologists & Oceanographers: Study visibility degradation due to seasonal or geographic environmental variations
  • Defense & Surveillance: Design of passive/active underwater optical sensing platforms in variable water types
  • Educational Institutions: Demonstrate underwater optical phenomena and the effects of physical parameters on imaging clarity
